Known as Fritch, America, this community lies in Carson and Hutchinson counties in the center of the Texas Panhandle. The area is a flat piece of land surrounded by canyons and draws made by the Canadian River. Amarillo is 30 miles south, southwest of the town, and Borger is 15 miles to the east.
Area Profile:
The only National Monument in Texas is located in the Lake Meredith National Recreation Area. Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument in the red bluffs area of the Canadian River attracts a lot of public interest as well as archaeologists who have studied stone slab houses dating back to1200.
Community Profile:
Fritch is considered a bedroom community. Most of the residents find employment in Amarillo and Borger. Although the Texas panhandle area is known as an agriculture area, this unique city is a residential area of commuters. Unlike other towns in the area, Fritch does not rely on agriculture jobs. Although there are ranches on the outskirts of town, few farms are found because of the unique terrain.
The rate of unemployment recorded in March 2013 was 5.4%. The low rate compares to the state unemployment of 6.3%, and is well below the national average of 7.6%.Agrium, Pantex and CnocoPhillips are major employers of the area, all located nearby. The average commute time is 25 minutes.
The Sanford-Fritch Independent School district serves the community, with an elementary school, middle school and a high school. C H A M P School, in the Dumas Independent School District is another public school for grades 9-12, and has an enrollment of 45 students.
