Hereford, Texas in Deaf Smith County, is a small rural community about 60 miles West of Canyon TX on Highway 60 and Highway 385. It is this rural setting and small friendly atmosphere that makes Hereford one of our favorite places in the Texas panhandle. Hereford is known as the Beef Cattle Capital of the World, and the famous Hereford breed of beef cattle gets its name from the area. It is the thriving cattle business that keeps the unemployment rate lower than the Texas state average and housing prices low. You can find a single family home for just over $80,000 in Hereford. Apartments are available and rent averages $600.
We also like Hereford because, although it is a small rural community with an emphasis on ranching and manufacturing, there are over 200 acres dedicated to parks in the area. Each year, the Hereford Parks Department holds a fishing tournament in the Spring and Fall. In December, we can go to the Christmas in the Park celebration and watch the lighting of the community Christmas Tree.
The Hereford Aquatic Center on East 15th Street is a good place to enjoy the water or take part in regular water aerobics classes. Another reason Hereford is one of our favorite communities is the John Pitman Municipal Golf Course on South Main Street. This 18 hole course has a Class A PGA professional on staff and is one of the best golf courses in the area. Hereford is special for its rural location, variety of activities and low cost of living.
